Winterabc 2021 Day 13

Love and healing your way. Rebel here about to finish tech week with a focus on cultural rights.

everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits

If you have read my previous posts (thank you), I decided to look at the relationship between technology and some of the basic human rights. I had no idea that art, yes art, is a human right! It comes under the cultural rights, as stipulated in Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be “everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.”

Art, as defined by the Oxford dictionary, is the use of the imagination to express ideas or feelings, particularly in painting, drawing or sculpture. The celebration of all its forms is our right, and what a joy to be living in a digital era where there are countless apps to share and preserve whichever art language you speak. Yes, tech is aiding in creating, sharing and preserving the arts.

That was a bit of a side note, I got quite excited when I discovered this, but art is part of our culture. Cultural right, however, can be defined as the right of access to, participation in and enjoyment of culture. It can be further understood that people of a particular background to enjoy their own culture, profess and practise their own religion, use their own language (in private and in public); and participate effectively in cultural life. In a nutshell, we are allowed to be ourselves, culturally speaking. Blogging alone has exposed me to so many cultural norms unfamiliar to me and I am eternally grateful. Celebrate, share and learn about different cultures from the comfort of your space, a right facilitated in part by tech.
